The ‘Pearl of the Persian Gulf’, Dubai is an innovative and cosmopolitan city. Here in the desert, a traditional past meets a modern-day hi-tech, commercial centre. Dubai’s fast growth has been likened to Las Vegas. There’s plenty to see and do both in and out of town. Here are some examples:
- The Burj Al Arab is the landmark of modern Dubai. Built on an artificial island, this five star hotel is shaped like a sail. The platform at 321 meters has been the venue for some thrilling sporting events. Enjoy amazing views at the skyview bar. There are many other modern resorts in Dubai with excellent restaurants and nightlife as well as white sandy beaches. Children will love the Wild Wadi Arabian themed waterpark.
- In the areas of Bur Dubai, Jumeirah and Deira, there are many historical buildings and museums including the Dubai Museum, Grand Mosque, a dhow wharfage from 1830, an archaeological site and Heritage House, the home of a wealthy pearl merchant built from coral and gypsum. For a peaceful getaway visit the historical town of Hatta with its stunning views of the Hajar Mountains.
- Dubai is the jumping off point for some very active adventure. Go desert driving, sand boarding, camel riding or dine among the dunes. Explore the Persian Gulf states on G.A.P. Adventures’ Arabian Seatrek or aboard RCI’s Brilliance of the Seas, based here each winter.
- The modern shopping malls are outstanding but don’t miss the traditional markets, especially Gold Souk selling everything from ingots to intricate jewellery.
